California Wildfires – Rim Fire

Wild Fire Grows ~ State of Emergency declared for San Francisco

Rim Fire Burns Near Yosemite National Park

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for the city only 150 miles away because the fire is a threat to the lines and stations that pipe power to the city.

San Francisco gets 85 percent of its water from the Yosemite-area Hetch Hetchy reservoir that is about 4 miles from the fire, and two of its three hydroelectric power stations in the area have been forced to shut down.

The Rim Fire began Saturday in Stanislaus National Forest near Groveland, Calif. Growing rapidly, the wildfire which is raging out of control grew to nearly 200 square miles and spread into a remote part of Yosemite National Park on Friday.

Birth of a Star

birth of a star

Astronomers at the ALMA radio telescope in Chile, have captured images of the birth of a star some 1,400 light-years away from Earth.

The image of Herbig-Haro object HH 46/47 combines radio observations acquired with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) with much shorter wavelength visible light observations from ESO’s New Technology Telescope (NTT).

What is a SuperMoon? + Photos

The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System.

A full moon will make its closest approach to Earth this year, on June 22 into June 23, and it won’t be your regular once a month full moon because it will look more impressive than any full moons seen so far in 2013.

This most recent occurrence of a Supermoon  when the moon is the closest and largest full moon of the year and the Moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013. It will not be so close again until August 10, 2014.

There were Supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992, 2005 and March 2011.

A Supermoon is a full or new moon at its closest approach (called lunar perigee) the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, this will make the size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth, look somewhat larger.

The term “Supermoon”, technically called a Perigee Full Moon by  astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, and is the term used to describe when the moon is full or new and is at 90% or greater mean perigee distance to Earth.
